I was at SM Southmall last June 1 to grab something to eat before my 6pm shift when I saw that there was an album launch that was about to start in a few minutes. It was for Aquarela, a bossa nova group. I didn't intend to watch; the "bossa nova" acts that are oh-so-popular these days really don't suit my taste. I've been a bossa nova listener since I was born, and the current local bossa nova albums sound nothing like the music I grew up with and love. I thought it was another pop "bossa" album.
I did check out the track list of the album to be launched out of curiosity, though. Among the
walang-sawang Corcovado and
Waters of March was a not-as-popular Antonio Carlos Jobim song that I really love:
Anos Dourados. I learned it from my dad, Abet learned it from me. I had to stay for that one.
Good thing I did. Aquarela performed bossa nova just how I like it. I ended up informing my manager that I was going to be an hour late for "personal reasons" (hey, good music is reason enough). Aquarela, which means "watercolor" in Portuguese, is made up of the husband-and-wife tandem of Miguel (guitar/vocals) and Evelyn (vocals) Jutueau and its band.
They performed all the songs from the album except Jobim's
A Felicidade, one of "our" songs. The accompaniment was canned, they only had a saxophonist with them (not Dix Lucero), who didn't impress me all that much (Paul pa rin--haha, loyal!). I still enjoyed the performance, though. I left with a CD autographed by the couple. ;-)
The track list is as follows:
1. Melena Loca
2. Felicidade
3. Anos Dourados
4. Flor De Lis
5. Triste
6. Waters Of March
7. O Lumapit Ka
8. Corcovado
9. Aquarela Do Brasil
There will be an album launch on Saturday, June 30, 6pm, at Alabang Town Center.
